Adapted by Visible Fictions from the novel by John Steinbeck
"But Kino's hand had closed tightly on the pearl again, and he was glancing about suspiciously, for the song of evil was in his ears."
Based on an old Mexican folk tale, The Pearl tells the story of Kino, a Mexican pearl diver, whose fortunes change dramatically when he finds a pearl as 'perfect as the moon'.
Kino believes that the pearl will magically transform his impoverished life. He will marry Juana in the church and their son Coyotito will receive an education. Obsessed by his dream, Kino is blind to the greed and fear the pearl arouses in his neighbours. Soon the promise of wealth and riches fades rapidly when the pearl invites only enemies, misfortune and grief into his life.
Inspired by the imagery of the novel, Visible Fictions' adaptation is a piece of moving drama that retains the author's haunting simplicity and his deep understanding for humanity.
