Written by Oliver Emanuel
Directed by Suzi Morrice
Since July Visible Fictions have been working with a group of young men from Polmont Young Offenders Institution. A director and writer have been exploring themes within Curse of the Demeter and are now working with a script written for the project by Oliver Emanuel. This new work, Ship of Shadows, explores themes of fear and confinement and with the direction of Suzi Morrice, will offer a real insight into the thoughts and feelings of the participants.
Ship of Shadows
Loaded with a cargo of silver sand and boxes of earth, the Demeter sets sail to Whitby. On board a young boy
prepares for his first voyage and joins a crew of veteran sailors, but this is no ordinary crossing.
Days engulfed in black mist.
Nights taken over by terrifying dreams.
Raging storms, strange noises, ghostly apparitions and eerie shadows.
This must be a cruel trick of the mind or could it be the work of the devil?
Below deck and around the galley table, the usual banter of the sailors is replaced by talk of murderers,
stowaways, savage dogs and witches on board the ship. The captain can't explain why one by one the crew are disappearing.
This is not how the story was supposed to unfold . . .
Ship of Shadows, a journey into a petrifying dark world were all is not as it seems.
