State of Emergency

State of Emergency is a dynamic, interactive, cross circular experience for S2 pupils delivered by Visible Fictions via the Glow network.

Everyday we are faced with images of war in the media but do we take the time to understand why conflict happens? With so many opposing views and situations to take into account, trying to make sense of it is daunting.

State of Emergency will begin to tackle these dilemmas using theatre arts to bring the stories of war to life. Via the Glow network S2 pupils will experience live online dramas which will invite them to explore and debate the issues surrounding war.

Partners include LTS and the BBC who will provide dynamic resources and rare opportunities to learn about the art of making news, how the media report stories and access to archive material.

This project will work organically with teachers across the curriculum, ensuring the work is relevant and meaningful to them. Teachers will be supported by Visible Fictions' Teaching Artists to create resources through the Glow network, linking up with other schools across Scotland and the world. The online dramas will be broadcast through Glow in the ‘intensive week' running from 15th - 19th November. The project will culminate in a live event on Friday 19th November.

State of Emergency will address big questions, many of which there will be no answer to, but the journey of trying to make sense of our world will be both insightful and exciting. Visible Fictions believe that drama brings subjects to life and responds directly to the Curriculum for Excellence.

Now it works
We began consultations with the schools in February and will continue to work with them in forming a structure in which they can deliver this ambitious project. With the support of LTS, teachers will be given Glow training to enable them to fully access all the resources and functions available on Glow and to help them begin the two way conversation with teachers across Scotland to develop resources and share ideas.

Every school is adopting a different strategy to deliver the project. Some are coming off timetable for the full week; others are staying within timetable and delivering those lessons using the themes within State of Emergency. It is anticipated that all schools will take part in the event on the finial Friday.
